Birds start screaming at 4am like they just won the lottery. They didn't. They're just awake and want everyone to know about it. That's the whole secret behind the dawn chorus—it's basically nature's version of posting "up and at 'em" on social media before the sun even thinks about clocking in.
Scientists say birds chirp early because the air is clearer and sound travels better. Sure. Or maybe they're just competitive little weirdos who found out that being the loudest gets you noticed. First one up wins the worm, brags about it, then judges everyone else who rolls out of bed after sunrise like some kind of failure.
Here's the thing though. Birds don't need coffee to pull this off. They run on pure chaos and the thrill of annoying sleeping creatures. Meanwhile, most of us can barely form a sentence before our first cup. We stumble around like zombies, squinting at daylight like it personally attacked us, mumbling something about why mornings exist in the first place.
The birds figured out their system works because nobody's competing with them at that hour. Smart move, honestly. Get your business done while everyone else is unconscious. But here's where they lose me—they keep going. All day. Chirping like they've got unlimited energy and zero chill.
Me? I'm taking the coffee route. Let the birds have their 4am bragging rights. I'll take my alarm clock in a mug, thank you very much. And if dawn feels a bit too aggressive for your taste, maybe it's time to hit reset with something that makes sunrise feel completely optional.

Roaster/Cafe notes:
The Evergreen Coffee Lounge (https://evergreencoffeelounge.ca/ )
Ingersoll, Ontario
I have to give a shout out to this small shop in my hometown, Ingersoll Ontario. They have put together a great little space for fine coffee and darn good food. Whenever I head down to my Dad’s farm, where the birds really are spectacular, I get the chance to take the old boy into town and enjoy a coffee and a nibble.
In their own words: “Situated in downtown Ingersoll, ON, the Evergreen Coffee Lounge is a specialty coffee shop offering delicious hot and iced espresso-based drinks, premium teas, and some of Oxford County’s finest baked goods, including vegan and gluten-free options. Our menu also features a daily fresh-made Sandwich of the Day and an amazing assortment of locally crafted baked goods and treats.”
It’s literally 8 minutes off the 401, between Woodstock and London, half way along the one block of downtown Ingersoll.
