Your brain just glitched on your own name.
Someone called out to you and for a split second you weren't sure if that collection of syllables actually belonged to you. Like hearing a recording of your voice but worse because this is supposedly your identity and it just felt alien and wrong.
The technical folks might label this as a mild dissociative moment. The overworked among us recognize it as Tuesday. But here's what's really happening - your internal operating system is running on fumes and the identity recognition software is lagging like a computer trying to open seventeen browser tabs on dial-up internet.
This gets even weirder when you think about it. Your name is just a sound that people agreed to attach to you. A verbal bookmark. And most days your brain accepts this arrangement without question. But when the caffeine levels drop and the mental RAM gets maxed out, suddenly that bookmark doesn't link to anything. The file won't open. Error 404: Identity Not Found.
The fix is surprisingly simple though. A proper cup of coffee acts like hitting the refresh button on your whole system. The warmth travels down. The caffeine kicks in. And slowly all those loose wires reconnect. Your name becomes yours again. The world makes sense. You remember which human you're supposed to be today.
It's almost magical how liquid beans can reboot your sense of self.
Speaking of which, if your mornings need more of this kind of caffeinated clarity mixed with a healthy dose of not taking life too seriously, go check out the Black Coffee, Please site for back issues
