Your brain is lying to you again

Posted 15/9/2026

You locked the door. You know you locked the door. Your hand literally touched the lock. And yet, three steps down the driveway, your brain casually throws out, "but did you though?"

This is not a you problem. This is a tired brain problem.

When your brain is running low on fuel, it stops trusting itself. Simple tasks start feeling uncertain. Did I send that email? Did I turn off the stove? Did I lock the door or did I just dream about locking the door? The confidence just evaporates, and suddenly you're doing three full laps back to the front door like some kind of confused security guard.

Here's the thing though. Your brain isn't broken. It's just foggy. And foggy brains do foggy things. They second guess. They loop. They make you look slightly unhinged in your own driveway.

The science behind it is actually kind of fascinating. When your brain is fatigued, your memory encoding gets sloppy. You complete the action but your brain doesn't stamp it properly, so it files it under "unclear" instead of "done." Then your doubt machine kicks in and off you go, back to the door.

Coffee doesn't just wake you up. It actually helps your brain encode those small routine moments more clearly so you can walk away from the door with a little more swagger and a lot less second guessing.
