Somewhere between waking up and your first sip, your brain turns into a tiny dramatic villain who sees threats everywhere.
A coworker sends a perfectly harmless "can we chat later?" message and suddenly you're mentally rehearsing your resignation speech. Your neighbor waves from across the street and you wonder what they meant by it. A two-word text from a friend reads like a courtroom accusation.
None of this is happening in reality. Your brain is just running on fumes and catastrophizing like it's getting paid overtime.
Here's the weird thing though. Tone is not actually in the words. It lives in the mind of the reader. And a tired mind defaults to defensiveness faster than you can say "did I do something wrong?" Text has no facial expressions, no warmth, no raised eyebrow that softens a sentence. So your sleepy brain fills in the blanks and it always picks the worst possible option.
Then coffee shows up. And suddenly that same message reads totally fine. Normal even. You feel a little silly for spending eight minutes drafting a careful response to what turned out to be a completely ordinary sentence.
Coffee does not just wake you up. It restores something closer to emotional common sense. It lowers the drama dial and brings the volume of your inner critic down from a ten to maybe a four.
